A tragic event unfolded in Keene, Texas, when a 12-year-old and a 20-year-old man were arrested and charged with the murder of a Sonic drive-in employee.

The pre-teen is accused of using an AR-15 rifle to fatally shoot the employee during an argument involving another man, who has since been caught and charged for his involvement in the incident.

On the evening of May 13, around 10 pm, the Keene Police Department received several calls regarding a shooting at the Sonic drive-through. Officers discovered 32-year-old Matthew Davis suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Though rushed to the hospital, Davis succumbed to his injuries.

According to the investigation, 20-year-old Angel Gomez was involved in a dispute in the Sonic parking lot with others present in his car when Davis, a Sonic employee, stepped in. As the argument escalated, Davis confronted Gomez, who was allegedly relieving himself at the rear of the parking area. The 12-year-old, a passenger in Gomez’s vehicle and whose identity remains undisclosed, took the AR-15 rifle from the car and started firing. Davis was hit and later died in the hospital.

After the shooting, both the 12-year-old and Gomez initially fled the scene. Gomez eventually returned and was arrested by the authorities. The young suspect was located at a house in Rio Vista, where several firearms were found. Gomez faces charges of tampering with evidence for taking the AR-15 and fleeing the scene, with the possibility of escalated charges to murder. The 12-year-old has been charged with murder and is being held at a juvenile detention center in Granbury.

Matthew Davis, who had recently relocated to Keene and began working at the Sonic restaurant just a few weeks prior, leaves behind a ten-year-old son.

Shootings in fast food restaurant drive-throughs or restaurants have repeatedly been in the news lately. Just last week, four people were shot, one fatally, in an Indianapolis Steak ’n Shake restaurant parking lot.

On March 31, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, police responded in the afternoon to a shooting near a McDonald’s. Officers found Victor Torres, 39, dying in the arms of his girlfriend. Deandre Vigil, 24, was charged with murder.
