Tragedy struck in Mexico on Saturday, April 29, when a bus plummeted off a cliff, leaving several people dead or injured.

Mexican authorities confirmed that the bus accident occurred in western Mexico, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and injuring more than 30 people, 11 of whom were children.

The Nayarit prosecutor’s office revealed that the bus plunged nearly 50 feet into a ravine on Saturday night. The crash took place in the state of Nayarit, known for its highway connecting the cities of Tepic and Puerto Vallarta, a popular tourist spot.

The prosecutor’s office tweeted that they quickly teamed up with different federal and state authorities to help the victims. Images shared by Nayarit’s Security and Civil Protection Ministry displayed rescue teams pulling survivors from the wreckage. It was confirmed that among the dead were eleven women and seven men, while eleven minors were rushed to hospitals for treatment.

Pedro Nunez, a civil protection officer, mentioned that the ill-fated bus was carrying passengers on a 140 mile journey from Guadalajara in the neighboring Jalisco state to Guayabitos, a beach resort in Nayarit.

Nunez also noted that there were no foreigners on the bus, and all passengers were Mexican nationals.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

The accident comes after another deadly bus crash in February in the central Mexican state of Puebla, which claimed the lives of 17 people. Fifteen of the passengers died at the scene, while two others lost their lives while being taken to the hospital.
